The best live wallpaper apps for Mac in 2026

What are the best live wallpaper apps for Mac?

In 2026, five names come up most: PrimoEngine, Backdrop, Wallper, Plash and the aerial wallpapers built into macOS. Wallpaper Engine, the big name on Windows, has no Mac version (we cover that in Wallpaper Engine for Mac).

They don’t all do the same thing. Some play video, one shows websites, one renders shaders live. The table sums it up, and each app gets its own section below.

PrimoEngine: GPU shaders that pause on their own

We made it, so here are just the facts. PrimoEngine draws native Metal shaders on your GPU from files a few kilobytes in size. It also runs sandboxed, offline web wallpapers (HTML, Canvas and WebGL), illustrated video scenes and high-resolution stills.

Some shaders move with the music you play, like the Reactor collection. The watercolor-style scenes in Cozy are video. You can set a different wallpaper on each display, and Premium adds rotation, a time-of-day schedule and a live lock screen.

When a full-screen app or a window covers the desktop, it stops drawing: 0% CPU, measured on the Mac. More on that in do live wallpapers drain your battery?.

The app is free with no account, and 6 wallpapers are free forever. Premium is $8.99 once and unlocks all 102 in the catalog. The same license activates 1 Mac and 1 PC, since the app also runs on Windows 11 (in beta).

You can make your own, too: a wallpaper is a folder with a manifest.json and a shader or a web page, packed as a .livewallpaper file. The creator docs include examples and ready-made prompts for asking an AI to build one.

The honest limits: it needs macOS 26 and Apple Silicon, and the catalog is curated, much smaller than the community video libraries.

Backdrop: a large video library

Backdrop, by Cindori, is all about video. It plays 4K files on the desktop and the lock screen, supports a wallpaper per display, playlists and your own videos. Its strength is volume: thousands of community wallpapers you can search by style, color and mood.

It runs on macOS 15 and later, which helps if you haven’t upgraded yet. The free tier has no time limit but caps you at 3 watermarked wallpapers. To unlock everything you subscribe or buy a lifetime license.

Wallper: 4K video with a one-time license

Wallper follows the same idea as Backdrop: 4K video on the desktop and the lock screen, a community gallery and a wallpaper per display. According to its site, it pauses or mutes playback on hidden displays.

A clear advantage is that it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It sells a one-time license with a 7-day free trial, and its site offers a direct DMG download.

Plash: any website as your wallpaper

Plash, by Sindre Sorhus, does one thing well: it shows a web page as your background. Use it for a dashboard, a calendar, the Bing photo of the day or an HTML animation. It can reload the page on a timer, and you can even click into it.

It is free, has no ads, and is on the Mac App Store. The current App Store version requires macOS 26.4 or later. There is no catalog: you bring the content.

The aerial wallpapers that come with your Mac

Since macOS Sonoma, the Mac has aerial wallpapers of landscapes, cities, underwater scenes and Earth. They move when you lock or unlock your Mac and sit still on the desktop. By default, the aerial you pick also becomes your screen saver.

It is the right choice if you want motion without installing anything. Just don’t expect animation on the desktop itself or content beyond what Apple ships.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free live wallpaper app for Mac?

Among the free options, PrimoEngine includes 6 animated wallpapers that stay free forever, two of them music reactive, and Plash turns any website into a wallpaper. Backdrop also has a free tier, limited to 3 watermarked wallpapers.

How do I get a moving wallpaper on my Mac?

macOS does not animate the desktop on its own: the aerial wallpapers only move when you lock and unlock. For motion on the desktop, install an app such as PrimoEngine, Backdrop, Wallper or Plash and pick a wallpaper in it.

Do live wallpapers slow down a Mac?

It depends on the app and the content. PrimoEngine stops drawing when the desktop is covered (0% CPU, measured on the Mac), and Wallper says it pauses playback on hidden displays. 4K video usually costs more than a shader.

Can I have a live wallpaper on the Mac lock screen?

Yes. macOS aerials move on the lock screen, and Backdrop, Wallper and PrimoEngine Premium bring animation there too.

Which live wallpaper app works on an Intel Mac?

PrimoEngine needs Apple Silicon. Wallper says it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and Backdrop requires macOS 15 or later.
