Wallpaper Engine for Mac: does it exist, and what to use instead
Is there a Wallpaper Engine for Mac?
No. As of October 2026, the Wallpaper Engine Steam page lists only Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported systems. There is also a free Android app that sends wallpapers from your PC to your phone (it needs Android 10 or newer).
The official help center is clear about it: Wallpaper Engine is currently available for Windows and Android only, and there are no immediate plans to support other platforms. The reasons given are technical and practical. The app works very close to the operating system, and most Steam users are on Windows.
So be careful with sites offering a “free Wallpaper Engine for Mac” download. There is no official version, and installers from unknown sources are a risk you don’t need.
Why do people want Wallpaper Engine in the first place?
Credit where it’s due: on Windows, Wallpaper Engine is the benchmark. As of October 2026 it costs $4.99 on the US Steam store as a one-time purchase, and it has more than 234,000 English reviews, the vast majority positive.
Its biggest strength is the Steam Workshop, with hundreds of thousands of free community wallpapers, plus an editor that animates still images, 2D and 3D scenes, videos and websites. No Mac app comes close to that volume of content. If that library is what you are after, nothing on macOS replaces it today.
What are the Wallpaper Engine alternatives on Mac?
On a Mac, the answer is an app built for macOS. Each one covers part of what Wallpaper Engine does.
| App | Price (Oct 2026) | What it plays | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| PrimoEngine | Free, lifetime Premium $8.99 | Metal shaders, web (Canvas/WebGL), video | macOS 26, Apple Silicon |
| Backdrop | Free with 3 watermarked wallpapers; $1.99/month, $14.99/year or $29.99 lifetime | Video | macOS 15 or later |
| Wallper | One-time license from $14.99, 7-day trial | Video | macOS 14.6 through 26, per its site |
| Plash | Free | Web pages | macOS 26.4 (App Store) |
| macOS (built in) | Included | Apple aerial videos | Comes with the system |
PrimoEngine
PrimoEngine is our app, made in Brazil. It draws native Metal shaders on your GPU, runs sandboxed offline web wallpapers (HTML, Canvas and WebGL), and plays illustrated video scenes. Some shaders react to the music you are playing, like the ones in the Reactor collection.
The app is free with no account, and 6 wallpapers are free forever. Premium is $8.99 once and unlocks all 102 wallpapers in the catalog, the video scenes like the Cozy collection, a live lock screen, rotation and a time-of-day schedule. The same license covers 1 Mac and 1 PC.
When a window or a full-screen app covers the desktop, it stops drawing (0% CPU, measured on the Mac). We go deeper in do live wallpapers drain your battery?.
Where it falls short: the catalog is curated and far smaller than the Workshop, and it needs macOS 26 on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.
Backdrop
Backdrop, by Cindori, plays 4K video on the desktop and the lock screen, with thousands of community wallpapers, playlists and a different wallpaper per display. It runs on macOS 15 and later, so it covers older systems than PrimoEngine does. You can subscribe or buy a lifetime license, and the free version is limited to 3 watermarked wallpapers.
Wallper
Wallper is also focused on 4K video on the desktop and lock screen, with a community gallery and support for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It sells a one-time license with a 7-day free trial.
Plash
Plash, by Sindre Sorhus, turns any website into your wallpaper: a dashboard, a calendar, an HTML animation. It is free, has no ads, and is on the Mac App Store. It has no catalog of its own; you pick the page.
The aerial wallpapers built into macOS
Since macOS Sonoma, the Mac has shipped aerial wallpapers (landscapes, cities, underwater and Earth) that move when you lock or unlock your Mac. On the desktop they stay still. They are free and need no app, but you can’t bring your own content.
Which one should you pick?
If you want a big video library, Backdrop and Wallper have more content. If you just want a website behind your windows, Plash. If you want animation rendered live on the GPU that reacts to sound, pauses by itself, and you use both a Mac and a PC, PrimoEngine covers both with one purchase.
