Wallpaper Engine alternatives on Windows: Lively and PrimoEngine
What are the alternatives to Wallpaper Engine on Windows?
Windows 11 does not animate your wallpaper by itself. Under Settings, Personalization, you get a picture, a solid color, a slideshow or Windows Spotlight, which rotates Microsoft photos. For motion, you need an app.
Wallpaper Engine is the most popular one. The alternatives that come up most are Lively Wallpaper and, more recently, PrimoEngine, which arrived on Windows as a beta. Here is what each one does well and where each one falls behind.

Wallpaper Engine: the biggest library
There is no way around it: if content volume is what matters, Wallpaper Engine wins. The Steam Workshop holds hundreds of thousands of free community wallpapers, and the editor turns still images into animated scenes with particles and scripting.
It pauses on its own while you play or use a maximized app, can pause on battery, supports multiple monitors, turns any wallpaper into a screen saver and has audio visualizers. A free Android app sends wallpapers to your phone.
It is actively developed: version 2.8 shipped in May 2026. In June, version 2.8.42 removed the “Application” wallpaper type, which ran executables as wallpapers, from the public Workshop. The developer said it affected about 0.5% of items.
It costs $4.99 on the US Steam store as of October 2026, paid once, and runs on Windows 10 and 11. There is no Mac version (see Wallpaper Engine for Mac).
Lively Wallpaper: free and open source
Lively is the pick for anyone who doesn’t want to pay anything. It is open source under GPL-3.0, with no features locked behind a paywall, and it is available on the Microsoft Store and GitHub.
It plays hardware-accelerated video and GIFs, web pages, Shadertoy links and even Unity or Godot games as wallpapers. It pauses while a game or full-screen app runs, can pause on battery, supports multiple monitors and lets you use any wallpaper as a screen saver.
The latest release on GitHub, 2.2.1.0, came out in September 2025. The Microsoft Store version needs Windows 10 1809 or later.
PrimoEngine: beta, one license for PC and Mac
PrimoEngine is our app, made in Brazil, and on Windows it is a beta. Here is what that means up front: the installer is not signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time (click “More info” and then “Run anyway”). And the catalog is curated, with 102 wallpapers, far smaller than the Workshop.
What it does differently:
- One license for PC and Mac. Premium is $8.99 once and activates 1 PC and 1 Mac with the same code. If you use both, you buy once.
- Native ARM64. There are separate installers for x64 (Intel and AMD) and ARM64, such as Snapdragon X laptops.
- DirectX 11 shaders. Shaders drawn every frame on your GPU, some reacting to music, like the Reactor collection. It also runs sandboxed offline web wallpapers and illustrated video scenes from the Cozy collection.
- Pauses when nobody is looking. With a full-screen app, a game, a covered desktop or a sleeping display, it stops drawing. More in do live wallpapers drain your battery?.
- Installs without admin rights. It lives in the system tray and updates itself.
The free app includes 6 wallpapers and a different wallpaper per monitor. Premium adds the rest of the catalog, rotation and a time-of-day schedule, your own videos and the live screen saver. It needs Windows 11 23H2, so it is not an option on Windows 10.
Want to make your own? Web wallpapers work the same on Windows and Mac, and the creator docs explain how to write shaders for both.
Which one should you pick?
- Want the biggest library, on Windows 10 or 11? Wallpaper Engine.
- Want to spend nothing and like free software? Lively.
- Use both a PC and a Mac, or have an ARM laptop? PrimoEngine, knowing it is a beta.
You can try the free options side by side first. If you also own a Mac, see the best live wallpaper apps for Mac.
Download PrimoEngine for Windows
