Is Wallpaper Engine free? And the free alternatives
Is Wallpaper Engine free?
No. Wallpaper Engine is a paid app, sold only on Steam. As of October 2026 it costs $4.99 on the US store, once, with no subscription. There is no official free version and no trial.
What is free is the content: once you own the app, the community wallpapers on the Steam Workshop cost nothing, and there are hundreds of thousands of them. That is why so many people search for “Wallpaper Engine free”: the app is cheap, but it isn’t free.
Can you try it before you pay?
Sort of. Steam accepts a refund request for any purchase made within the last 14 days and used for less than 2 hours. So you can buy it, try it for a while and ask for your money back if it isn’t for you. Beyond that, there is no official trial.
What about sites offering Wallpaper Engine for free?
Stay away. A “free Wallpaper Engine” downloaded outside Steam is pirated, and the installer comes from someone you can’t identify. The risk is bigger than it looks: a wallpaper app stays open all the time, starts with Windows and runs behind everything you do. It’s the perfect hiding place for a crypto miner or a password stealer.
If the point is not paying, there are genuinely free options, legal and maintained by people you can look up.

Lively Wallpaper (Windows)
Lively is the most complete free alternative on Windows. It’s open source under GPL-3.0, with no paid features, and it’s on the Microsoft Store and GitHub. It plays videos and GIFs with hardware acceleration, web pages, Shadertoy links and even games made in Unity or Godot. It pauses when a game is full screen and it runs on Windows 10.
What it doesn’t have is a library the size of the Workshop: the content is whatever you bring.
PrimoEngine (Windows and Mac)
PrimoEngine is our app, made in Brazil. It’s free with no account, and 6 wallpapers stay free forever, two of them reacting to the music playing on your computer. They are shaders drawn live on your GPU, so they stay sharp at any resolution.
It stops drawing when the desktop is covered, so it stays out of the way while you game or work. More in do live wallpapers drain battery?
To be upfront about the limits: on Windows it’s in beta and needs Windows 11 23H2, so it’s not for Windows 10. The full catalog (114 wallpapers), your own videos and the animated screen saver come with the lifetime Premium, $8.99 once, valid for 1 PC and 1 Mac.
Plash and the macOS aerials (Mac)
Wallpaper Engine doesn’t exist for Mac (we explain why in Wallpaper Engine for Mac). On a Mac, besides PrimoEngine, Plash is free and turns any website into your wallpaper. And macOS itself ships the aerials, landscape videos that move on the lock screen but stay still on the desktop.
Which one should you pick?
- Want to spend nothing and you’re on Windows 10? Lively.
- On Windows 11 and want ready-made, light wallpapers that react to music? PrimoEngine, free.
- On a Mac? PrimoEngine for real animation, Plash for a website behind your windows.
- Want the biggest library possible and fine paying $4.99? Then it’s Wallpaper Engine itself, bought on Steam.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free version of Wallpaper Engine?
No. The only official way to get Wallpaper Engine is to buy it on Steam, $4.99 in the US as of October 2026. Once you own it, the Steam Workshop wallpapers are free.
Can I try Wallpaper Engine before buying?
There is no trial, but Steam accepts refund requests within 14 days of purchase with less than 2 hours of use. In practice you can try it and return it if it isn't for you.
Is it safe to download Wallpaper Engine for free from other sites?
It isn't a good idea. Pirated copies come from sources nobody audits, and an app that runs all the time on your desktop is an ideal place to hide malware. If price is the problem, there are genuinely free alternatives.
What is the best free Wallpaper Engine alternative on Windows?
Lively Wallpaper is the most complete one: open source, nothing paid, with video, GIFs, web pages and even Unity or Godot games as wallpaper. PrimoEngine is free too, with 6 wallpapers free forever, but it needs Windows 11 23H2.
Is there a free Wallpaper Engine for Mac?
There is no Wallpaper Engine for Mac at all, paid or free. On a Mac, the free options are PrimoEngine (6 free live wallpapers), Plash (any website as wallpaper) and the macOS aerials, which only move on the lock screen.
Does Wallpaper Engine go on sale?
Yes, it is usually discounted during Steam's seasonal sales. Even then, it isn't free.
